Commune in Duluth @ Red Herring!
Get ready for another highly anticipated night of music presented by Commune Wednesdays. Come rock out with Commune at Duluth’s Red Herring October 22nd at 7pm, as we showcase We Are The Willows (solo), Rick McLean and headliner, Step Rockets.
Rick McLean, based in Duluth, MN, is a singer-songwriter who plays a variety of musical styles with a lyrical emphasis. His sound waivers from a long folksy story time sung around a roaring campfire sitting alongside your closest buddies, to a passionate rock ballad surrounded by hoards of punk teens in a dark, dingy theatre. He’s essentially a musical chameleon who doesn’t fit a particular genre, but plays a mixture of alt-country, folk-punk, and rock. He has two albums out already including “Coupla Focal” and “Here’s Another Fine Mess”. Listen to “Ballad of Frank Jacob” and “Dog Kennel Blues” to get a feel for his music.
Based out of South Minneapolis, We Are The Willows is an orchestral indie band comprised of a six-person ensemble. The synchronization of voices, guitar, banjo, bass, violin, cello, keys, and drums craft a dynamic sound combination of upbeat and intimate rhythms, “that evoke shared nostalgic feelings of love and loss”. Between 2013 and 2017, they released a 20-song concept album “Picture (Portrait)” and collaborated with Mike Noyce, guitarist for Bon Iver, on the song “The Prettiest Please”. They have toured and played festivals like SXSW with Blitzen Trapper, PHOX, S. Carey, and Matt Pond PA. If you’re a fan of The Shins, Fleet Foxes, or The Daredevil Christopher Wright, you might like this band. Performing and gracing us with their musical presence on this night will be Peter from We Are The Willows fora solo act!
Lastly, Minnesotan natives, The Step Rockets, will be closing out the show with an out of this world performance. The trio, made up of Brady Lillie, Johnny Syn, and Joshua Schmidt, came together in 2012 and have since catapulted from humble beginnings to appearing in multiple festivals, TV shows, and commercials. Their most popular and well known song “Kisser” has garnered more than 8 million hits on Spotify since it first came out on the scene in 2013. Their eclectic merging of indie pop, EDM, psychedelic synth, and catchy songwriting are closely reminiscent of WALK THE MOON, Panama Wedding, Great Good Fine Ok, and Smallpools. Fun times and a dance party will likely ensue.
